Nate's Big Surprise

Out of our three children, Nate is the one who believes most firmly in minimal effort.  He does very well in school, but he certainly isn't worried about getting all A's like his brother or having his handwriting, art, & math pages "perfect" like his sister.  He is what we affectionately refer to as a "Labor Faker".  This title was given to him in preschool by the director of the school.  This wise woman, who had probably 35 years of experience by the time Nate came along, noticed that whenever the Clean Up Song started, Nate sang very loudly and walked around looking very busy, but rarely, if ever, picked anything up.

We thought he would grow out of it.

Nope.

So imagine my total shock  surprise when I went to an Accelerated Reader assembly at school and found out that Nate was the third highest reader in all of third grade.  And, he was the top 6th reader school wide!!  Insert my jaw dropping pleasantly surprised face here.

Accelerated Reader is a program at school in which the students read books, any level, and earn points on quizzes.  The harder the books, the more points you can earn.  But if you miss too many on the quiz, then obviously you don't earn many points, if any.  I like this program because unlike other schools in my area, this is entirely student motivated.  Parents don't sign for how many pages kids have read.  The kids read the books, take the quizzes and earn the points.  Pretty straight forward. It also takes effort.

Nate had 452 points.  That's a lot of effort.
